Tony Stewart, Ron Petersen & Colton Aldridge Post Fine Results at Conseco!

The inaugural Indy Karting Classic is in the record books with J.D. Byrider Team Drivers Tony Stewart, Ron Petersen and Colton Aldridge posting great results. The race was run in Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the home of the Indiana Pacers. A slick track had teams scrambling for tire grip throughout the event. Scuffing-up tires with a grinder was the protocol for hooking-up to the polished concrete surface that had been sprayed with Coke syrup to help get traction.

In the TaG Senior Division Colton qualified 3rd, with Ron right behind in 4th. Both drivers ran up front in their respective heat race with Colton 2nd and Ron first. That set the lineup for the 20-lap main event with IndyCar’s AJ Allmendinger on the pole, Ron outside front row and Colton 3rd, behind AJ. An eventful race had Ron run in 2nd before getting a lap down early due to AJ spinning and blocking the track. From 18th on Lap 3, posting some of the fastest laps of the event, Ron weaved his way back to 4th at the checkers. Colton had a steady race, avoiding problems and never running out of the top-5, coming to the checkers in 5th.

Tony raced in the “Stars” Division and struggled with grip early in the day. After the TaG Senior race, Ron shared some setup information with Tony’s setup guy who was feverishly trying to find grip. Tony went out in the Stars feature and dominated the race for a big win over John Andretti and Alex Tagliani! This was a popular win for Tony in front of his home-state crowd.

The next event on the Team’s schedule will have driver Tony Petersen at Daytona International Speedway, December 29th and 30th, for the World Karting Association’s annual Kart Week.

6 simple steps to winterize your vehicle

If you live in a region burdened by winter’s wrath or plan to travel through one during the holidays,  it’s important to prepare your car, truck, van or SUV. Follow these 6 simple steps to winterize your vehicle:

Oil:
As temperatures drop, the oil in your vehicle will thicken. Depending on the weather your region is experiencing, check your owner’s manual to apply the correct oil viscosity as temperatures plummet.

Wipers:
When was the last time you took a look at your windshield wiper blades? If you see any cracks or the blades are coming loose, you’ll want to replace them before hitting the road. For regions plagued by ice storms, it’s wise to have a spare set of wipers in incase those in use become damaged.

Test Your Tire'sTread with a Penny

The tire tread covers the top of Lincoln's head and are good for snow travel.

Tires:
Having good tread on your tires is necessary for operating your vehicle in the snow. A good test for proper tire tread is to slide a penny in the tread (with the top of Lincoln’s head  toward the tread). If you can see the top of Lincon’s head, it’s time to replace your tires. Air pressure is another key factor for navigating in the snow and ice. Like your oil, your tire pressure changes with the temperature. Your owner’s manual will have the proper tire pressure information depending on the tempurature.

Antifreeze:
It’s important that your antifreeze-to-water ratio is in proper balance to prevent from freezing. Having a ratio of 50/50 (antifreeze-to-water) is a safe bet to keep from freezing during winter. To test your antifreeze ratio, you can pick up a tester kit from most auto-parts stores.

Gas:
Keep your gas tank full to prevent your gas lines from freezing. A good plan of action is to top off your tank after work or anytime before nightfall when temperatures are at their lowest.

Safety Kit:
Always have a winter safety kit handy if you plan to drive long distances or through rural areas. Here are a few items you’ll want at your disposal:
  - Extra pair of boots, gloves and coats      – Shovel
  - Bottled water and food                        - Flares
  - Jumper Cables                                     – Tire changing tools and a spare tire
  - Ice scraper

National Start Eating Healthy Day is November 2nd!

The J.D. Byrider community is proud to support the American Heart Association’s National Start Eating Healthy Day on Wednesday, Nov. 2nd by  encouraging everyone to have a healthier, happier holiday season this year.

Take a big step toward a healthier lifestyle by making small changes to your holiday eating habits.  Just a few ideas to get you going include:

•    When preparing turkey, reach for the lighter pieces of meat; they have fewer calories and less fat than the darker ones.
•    Keep portions in check.  A serving of meat is 3 ounces, about the size of a deck of cards.  So, be conscious of how much you put on your plate, and pass on the second helping.
•    When enjoying alcoholic beverages, break it up!  Reduce the amount of calorie-laden drinks you consume by drinking a glass of water between each beverage.  This will help fill your stomach, leaving less room to overindulge.
•    When it comes to desserts, treat yourself right.  The best way to enjoy a holiday without losing control is by sampling, rather than having full servings.  For example, have one bite of pie, half a cookie, and one small square of fudge.

AND, J.D. Byrider is giving away a prize pack that can help jump start your healthy eating habits AND buy your Thanksgiving dinner!

Register at any of the following Indianapolis locations to win a gift basket that includes a $100 grocery gift card, healthy living cookbooks, exercise guide and more!  Drawing will be held November 18, 2011.

Kinser to Race at Bloomington Speedway

Steve Kinser at Bloomington, IN J.D. Byrider with General Manager, Bob Slone on August 4, 2011.

Racing legend Steve Kinser hasn’t won a winged sprint car championship since 2005, but he’s enjoying work as much as ever, partly because he feels better.

Due to an accident in a May 30 crash in Lake Odessa, MI that required next-day surgery, Kinser has been driving with a titanium plate and several screws, but he hasn’t been slowed.

The next stop on his 69-race schedule is Friday night at Bloomington Speedway, a quarter-mile dirt track, which will host its first Outlaws race since 1999.

With his Bloomington-based crew intact, Kinser is third in the standings with five wins. He is 86 points out of the lead, a fair margin but not insurmountable with 24 races left.

At 57, Kinser is no longer stressing over securing sponsors.  He is now simply responsible for representing the sponsors and winning races and employs a staff to handle everything else.

“When I started my race team in 1994, I said I was never going to drive for nobody else,” Kinser said this week. “But with (sponsors cutting back) I was sort of on the low end, and I didn’t have the budget to hire the right people to take care of the sponsors the way they needed to be taken care of.

Other than a new primary sponsor — Bass Pro Shops — not much else has changed for Kinser.  Still performing as his crew chief is Scott Gerkin, a Mitchell, Ind., native.  Kinser’s other staff members include Gary DuBois, from Columbus, Ind.,  Kinser’s brother, Randy, and Mikey Kuemper assisting.

“Even though it’s owned by Tony Stewart and he’s the boss, he gives me the leeway to make all the mistakes,” Kinser said. “I don’t know if he’d do that for just anybody.”

He enjoys the continuity he created and Stewart left alone.

To that, Stewart said he’s the beneficiary.

“When we first talked about having Steve come drive (for us), I just couldn’t believe it was a possibility,” he said. “As a youngster, my dad and I went to the Bloomington Speedway to watch Steve give clinics when the World of Outlaws came to town. I have always looked up to him.

“He’s what everybody thinks of when they think of sprint car racing.”

Kinser has earned that reputation not only through the championships — no other driver has more than four titles — but through his resiliency.

The crash at Michigan’s I-96 Speedway that broke his arm occurred on a Monday, and he drove home in pain. Surgery followed the next day. He was back in the car three days later — flipping his car, no less — and won the next night.

Being competitive is what keeps him going.

“I went through a few months of broken bones, but other than that I’m probably healthier than I’ve been for a while,” he said.

“I’m overweight, and that’s something I should have taken care of last winter or the winter before that . . . but we’re still competitive.
